Seoul, South Korea : Guide to 9 gay bars
2026-01-05 18:13:02
Itaewon is really a blast — you could easily spend a whole week here.
Korean nightlife has a different rhythm than Taiwan’s: it usually only gets going after 1 AM, with drinking continuing until around 6 AM. If you go before that time there’s basically nobody, so make sure to adjust your energy and sleep schedule beforehand.
Most bars use wristbands for entry. If you’re staying nearby, a little trick is to head out around 11 PM to collect wristbands, go back for a short nap, and then come out again for peak hours — that way you can avoid long lines.
You don’t have to worry about being hungry along the way: there’s New York pizza, burgers, Japanese ramen, Korean food — even photo sticker booths and 24-hour currency exchanges. There’s always something to eat no matter how late it is.
Below are the nine bars we actually visited this time, shared purely as my personal, in-the-moment impressions.
【氣生】
Our home base. It’s not the busiest, but the owner and staff are very friendly, the drag queens are fun, and they sometimes hold K-Pop battles and performances. The overall vibe really feels like “coming home,” so we always return here when tired.
【Ground】
Korea’s G-Star. The bar focuses on K-Pop and the bartenders are all very handsome — I died here on the first night drinking until I threw up. It gets really crowded; on weekends you’ll almost always have to queue.
【PING】
Right below Ground; if Ground is too crowded you can come here first. The overall style is similar, but you’ll still need to wait on weekends.
【MGG】
Another G-Star. There are lots of handsome dancers and bartenders; even stepping outside for a smoke will get you hit on. The vibe is a lot of fun. The burger stall next door is filling and delicious.
【Dirty Heaven】
Feels a lot like BITCH Taipei in Ximen. The crowd is mostly bears, and the interior uses Christian imagery in a bold, clashing way. The smoking area is on the rooftop, which even has a church-like roof and a cross — the visuals are striking.
【DOPAMIN】
Music is K-Pop as well, but the crowd is more specific — mostly neat, cute Korean twinks. If you like Twink types you must come here.
【KOOKIE】
When we went the DJ leaned toward Techno or Tech House. On entry they hand out glow sticks of different colors depending on whether you’re single or taken; I saw someone wearing two and I immediately understood: open relationship.
【Eagle】
Korean CD bar with a darkroom. At 3 AM it wasn’t very crowded, but the darkroom already had some good-looking people. I later learned that it truly gets packed after 5 AM, during the underwear-only entry period.
【Bear Cave】
A newly opened bear bar. The first time we went it was already closed; the second day we arrived too early so we left because there weren’t many people, but the overall decor is really nice — cave-style.
Missed this time: Public and GYM (that’s okay — life needs a few regrets so there’s a next time).
Wishing everyone a messy, happy time in Seoul!
