Shared experience:
The pandemic completely disrupted Bangkok's GOGOBAR scene. Even before COVID I knew the boy street was slated for relocation, and after the pandemic there wasn’t any formation of a gay enclave. Most of the information I gathered before this trip were negative reviews saying prices were almost double. Initially I hadn’t planned to visit a GOGOBAR on this trip, but out of curiosity to see how bad it really was, I finished my massage in time to catch the first show and took the MRT to Silom Road.

JUPITER 2018 moved to Silom Soi 4, almost at the end of the lane; Silom Soi 4 used to be another gay hangout area with mostly bars where people sat and chatted on the street mixed with a few massage shops. Tonight the foot traffic in Soi 4 was similar to before, except there’s now a BANANA ROOM (a GOGOBAR) at the mouth of the lane that solicits customers; two mid-lane bars face each other with the usual number of patrons. After passing those two bars you feel the crowd thin out, and JUPITER 2018’s new location is in the latter half of the lane.

Act I:
It was Friday night. At the entrance a young man in black greeted me—less overbearing than the street-level place. After getting past the street-level screening you can assume people here have a clear purpose. I paid the 500B cover charge at the door (includes one drink), got a stamp on my arm, and told the staff there was only one of me. The staff seated me at a corner seat facing the stage. I ordered a Singha and began to take in the bar. The evening’s program hadn’t started yet; a singer was performing on stage and the venue was about 60% full. Regarding online complaints that there are too many female staff, I counted only three. When the singer left the stage, it meant the show was about to begin.

At first the GOGOBOYS walked the runway in white triangular briefs with white bathrobes, parading one by one and then walking the aisles on both sides of the bar before returning backstage. After all had done a round they came back on stage and stood at fixed positions. At that point, any GOGOBOY pointed at by the green laser pen from the audience meant he had caught a customer’s interest and would likely get a tip. A madam (hostess) came up to me and asked if there was a boy I liked; I shook my head and she politely left to ask other tables—no fuss. Most of JUPITER’s GOGOBOYS are lean and fit; from my experience they looked to average around 32 years old. Some of the customers inside were even more to my taste than the boys on stage. The GOGOBOYS left gradually with a low exit rate, and then the stage performances started.

JUPITER’s interlude music is still the loud airplane takeoff/landing sound. The show content and song choices have been largely the same for over a decade: energetic and masculine in style. Even when a ladyboy performed, the show kept a macho edge. Each performer's accents and poses hit right on the musical beats; the performances retained their old character and avoided vulgar routines. Midway through the show the GOGOBOYS returned, this time wearing yellow triangular briefs and repeating the same route and poses to increase their exposure. The second half featured slightly more suggestive moments, but only a little—nothing erotic. The final GOGOBOY entry signaled the end of the show; he came out in long pants showing only his upper body. The whole performance lasted about an hour; guests who only came to watch tended to leave then. Some customers who had picked a GOGOBOY had already left during the show, leaving mostly those who came to drink and hang out.

Since I didn’t find a GOGOBOY I liked, I started to scope out the staff and the madam. While watching the stage, I paid attention whenever a staff member or madam passed by. I noticed a madam and staff member number 4, and considered who to give an extra tip to tonight. In the end I put the second-place pick because #4 looked only about 22, which felt too young a gap. I took 200B from my wallet and waited for the madam to walk by. A group of drinkers arrived and she had to tend to them, so I waited until they finished ordering. When she went to the counter to fetch drinks, I took her hand, slipped 200B into her palm, complimented her in Thai, and left through the door. At the entrance I also tipped a performing ladyboy 100B and two other performers 100B each, thus finishing tonight’s visit.

Act II:
Saturday night, and MOONLIGHT was second on my GOGOBAR list, but I couldn’t forget the cute madam from last night and found myself heading back to Silom Soi 4. Passing through the front and middle of the lane I saw her standing at her door and waved; she came over, took my hand, paid the 500B cover charge and got my stamp, then led me in and seated me facing the center of the stage. I ordered my usual Singha. The stage was still in performance and I looked around for staff #4 but he wasn’t on duty. I asked the madam about the price to buy her a drink and she said 450B, so I bought her one. She lit up and double-checked with me; I nodded and made an OK sign. It’s rare for a customer to buy a madam a drink directly—madams typically earn tips by introducing GOGOBOYS or from big-spending customers and game-related drinks. She brought over a cup that seemed to be ice water and a pen holder with a small white chit inside, which I took as a signal that this table was not just here to watch the show. I asked the madam her name; in the noisy atmosphere she said it was X and even made an X symbol with her fingers. A downside to buying a madam or staff a drink is they can’t stay with you constantly; they must circulate to tend other customers and only return during gaps. X told me she’d already had four whiskies tonight.

Saturday night the venue was about 80% full; before the pandemic JUPITER would have been packed. Female customers were still few. The show routine was mostly the same, but in the final two routines tonight the performers would fully reveal at the last second, so the madam strictly controlled the floor to prevent phone photos. After the show X came back and chatted with me; another madam asked if I liked any boy, and I pointed at X. The madam joked I could take X out—to dance, get a late-night bite, or even back to the hotel. I laughed and said I didn’t have the energy for that. I settled the small chits on the table and slipped the remaining 500B directly into X’s hand. X took my hand and led me out the door, and in public hugged me—she held me as I promised I would come back tomorrow to see her.

Act III:
Sunday night, the last night of the trip, I planned to go all out. At JUPITER’s door X wasn’t visible, but an outside staff member recognized me and let me in smoothly without even stamping my arm. Inside I couldn’t find X at first; the staff seated me on the right side and I ordered another Singha. X suddenly appeared from somewhere and dragged me to a seat where a reservation sign was placed up front. I hesitated and asked if I could sit there, and X told me not to worry, removing the sign so I could sit. My plan for this night was to buy a drink for every madam present. I asked X how many madams were working tonight and she said five. I told X I wanted to buy each of them a drink, but X’s reaction was oddly flat—no emotion—she walked to the counter and then went to drink with a table that had ordered a big bottle, finally standing diagonally in front of me. That reaction felt wrong, so I pulled X back and asked if she’d ordered the drinks. It turned out X hadn’t understood my initial meaning, so I repeated that I wanted to buy one drink for each madam tonight. Only then did X respond as expected, repeatedly confirming it would be five drinks. After I clarified with words and gestures X went to the bar to order. Meanwhile a customer was seated on the other side of my table; I didn’t mind, except that meant many madams would be passing by our table tonight.

X first brought over three madams to greet me; one more was busy but would come later. The staff brought a tray with the white chits and five glasses of what looked like ice water and lined them up on the table. All the madams gathered at my table and we all had a sip. From the corner of my eye I noticed staff #4 was also present. I told X I wanted to buy #4 a drink too, but X seemed distracted; she said there were ten staff on duty tonight and asked if I wanted to buy a drink for all the staff too—which would be ten drinks and blow the budget. I shook my head and repeated slowly; X seemed to understand and shone the green laser at #4. #4 came over and X asked if this was the one; I nodded and confirmed. X spoke a few words to #4 and #4 went to the counter to order a drink alone. #4 came back with what looked like a cola. The other madams, noticing the activity, gathered again, and that night all the madams and #4 joined for a sip.

When the show starts it’s the madams’ busiest time: they have to tend to customers and control phones. Madams frequently passed my table, taking a sip and moving on. #4 seemed inexperienced and only sat with me once before going to help the patrons opposite me. I had wanted to settle the white chit on the table and give the remaining money as a tip to #4, but that chance had to be left to fate. Sunday’s show also had the last two routines reveal everything at the last second. The final GOGOBOY walk marked the end of the trip; #4 still hadn’t appeared. X asked a staff member to settle the white chit for me, and I tucked 500B into the staff’s hand. When I left my seat I found all the madams lined up in the aisle; #4 appeared among them. I tipped each madam and #4 200B, and outside the door I also tipped a ladyboy performer and two other performers 100B each. X and I finally walked out; X hugged me and asked if I would come back tomorrow. I told her I was returning to Taiwan the next day and hoped to see her again next time I came to Thailand, thus ending this trip to Thailand.
