Regarding the history of gay saunas in Bangkok, from my years of experience, BABYLON used to dominate the scene. Later, CHAKRAN (VCK) joined, giving Asian gay men an alternative to the image of BABYLON’s Western, older clientele. R3’s event operations spread by word of mouth in China and nearly became a must-visit spot for Chinese tourists. The pandemic dealt a blow that forced the long-established BABYLON to close, CHAKRAN kept altering its direction, and R3 expanded locations; the rise of Japanese-style onsen concepts reshuffled Bangkok’s gay sauna industry.

I hadn’t returned to Bangkok in about seven years. Today is Saturday: in the afternoon I had a massage that I had some expectations for but that turned out to be very basic, and in the evening many major saunas were holding events. I chose VCK because my past experiences at VCK events weren’t overly sexual and still had some performance elements. I took the BTS to ARI station and walked the familiar alleys — the neighborhood hasn’t changed much; but when I reached VCK’s entrance, it looked about half as grand as on my previous visit and none of the pre-pandemic imposing entrance remained. At the front desk they asked whether I wanted a massage or the sauna. The VCLUB massage photos pushed on X showed veteran performers with nothing new, so I paid the entrance fee of 450B, was given a drink voucher, and picked up a key and a towel opposite the desk before going upstairs.

The scheduled event time was 7:00. I reached the changing area around 7:00 as well, but the customers in the changing area were still relaxed — it was clear the event hadn’t started. I grabbed an unused locker, took off my clothes; now the towels provided are the small ones — I didn’t really want to use it, but everyone around was trying to cover themselves as much as possible. In the shower, the water temperature was hard to control; it seemed there was only a hot-water option, and no matter how I adjusted it it was too hot for me. I tried another showerhead that someone had just used, but the water was still too hot, so I gave up.

I continued exploring upstairs and passed through the darkroom area. As soon as I stepped into that space I saw two men seated, one of them bent over and orally pleasuring the other’s lower body. That area is not hard to explore — if you keep walking you find customers in small groups — and at the end I saw a spiral staircase going up; upstairs is the rooftop terrace, which was also the event area for tonight.

There were more people on the rooftop terrace, but it wasn’t crowded. A quick walk around revealed a small bar serving drinks, a modest pool or soaking pool, a small shower next to the pool, and some garden-like rest areas, though most guests clustered around the bar and the soaking pool. I sat on a bench near the bar and watched the comings and goings. Guests coming out of the pool could grab a fresh small towel at the bar, so this seat was a good people-watching spot — I was also amused at how some guests managed to tie the small towel perfectly around their waist.

The event didn’t start until about 7:30, and people began gathering around the bar. The host led four VCLUB masseurs to the event area, gave a brief greeting, and introduced the four masseurs. The masseurs were simply shirtless and did not interact with customers beyond a brief wave during the introductions before walking off. The host explained that the activity would take place in a small room by the soaking pool; those entering the room could not bring towels in, and could pick up a new towel at the bar when leaving.

People started to gather near the small room. At first the sliding door hadn’t opened, so customers could only watch the performers inside caressing on the bed from the doorway; some edged forward for a peek but quickly lost interest and stepped back. After a while the staff opened the sliding door and told people entering to throw their towels into a bamboo basket first. Following the crowd into the small room, customers naturally formed a circle around the bed to watch. The performers escalated from simple caressing to mutual oral activity; a few performers wearing glow wristbands were touching customers. One performer on the bed finally began to interact with a customer: he licked the nipple of the customer closest to him, then pulled that customer onto the bed, knelt before him, and performed oral on his genitals. Several staff wearing glow wristbands then provided further services to the customers they had selected. Watching this I started to feel a bit bored — the room was too small, and apart from on the bed there wasn’t much space to act. Interaction among customers was essentially zero; it was all just watching a show. Whether on the bed or by the window, the glow-wristband performers only served single customers and never led the whole room into erotic or sexual energy. Taking advantage of being able to leave, I walked out of the small room, picked up a clean small towel at the bar, went downstairs, changed, and left VCK.

VCK’s events are already different from the past: the space is at least half smaller than before, and I couldn’t even recognize the spot that used to have ghost stories attached to it. In earlier events, performers would first walk a lap around the pool, then invite customers into the adjacent soaking pool to interact. Once customers entered the soaking pool, performers would move among them and interact, and finally they’d enter the dark area by the pool — by then customers’ arousal had already been triggered, and in the dark area you couldn’t tell if someone was a performer; if you touched someone, you interacted directly.
