【Bangkok Kaikan Onsen: First Onsen Experience|Japanese-style × LGBT-friendly, Worth Trying?】

2025-05-15 15:08:24
For this Bangkok trip I planned a few more relaxed activities, and I happened to see many online recommendations for Kaikan Onsen in Phaya Thai — advertised as Japanese-style, gay-friendly, and open until the next morning — so I couldn’t resist trying it out myself.

🏯 The design and atmosphere really feel high quality
Walking in actually gave me the impression of entering a Japanese onsen. The overall decor is clean and tasteful, and there’s a milk bath that I liked the most, paired with an artificial cave waterfall sound — surprisingly relaxing and soothing. There are also hot and cold pools, a steam room, and a dry sauna. The space isn’t large but it doesn’t feel crowded, especially since I went on a weekday afternoon when there weren’t many people.

However, I found the steam room’s temperature a bit low — not very “steamy.” If you like very high-heat sweat sessions, you might find it underwhelming, which is a slight disappointment.

👬 The crowd and vibe are chill, but not very social
Most visitors are locals, with a few foreign tourists. The age range is wide — there are younger handsome guys and more mature men too. Overall the atmosphere is quiet; it’s not the lively, social type of sauna like Babylon or Chakran.

So if you enjoy relaxing in the baths, keeping a low profile and quietly taking in the surroundings, Kaikan Onsen should suit you. But if you’re expecting intense interaction or meeting lots of new people, you might find it a bit flat.

💬 Staff are friendly, and admission isn’t expensive
Entrance is 450 THB, which is a good price by Bangkok standards, and it’s open until 8 AM, so it’s convenient for night owls or people who want to soak after a massage. The front desk staff can communicate in English without problems and are pleasant and approachable.

📍 Conveniently located, but a little easy to miss
I walked from BTS Saphan Khwai station in about 10 minutes. The nearby alleys are small, so I recommend using Google Maps or you might miss it. The entrance isn’t very conspicuous, so people unfamiliar with the area may have to look around a bit.

✅ Summary of my impressions:
Recommended for:

People who like a Japanese onsen style

Those who want to relax, soak quietly, and don’t like too much noise

People who want a place to unwind before bed and take a soak at night

Minor downsides:

The steam room temperature is a bit low

The crowd and atmosphere are quiet, with low interactivity

Compared with other saunas, it leans more toward being a pure soaking place

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But a little secret: this place is actually quite suitable for a subtle, observant kind of flirtatious vibe. There were a few good-looking guys who just sat quietly by the pools, seeming like they were waiting for someone to start a conversation. If your gaze is sincere and you take a little initiative, you might see a nice development — it’s not a hot hunting ground, but rather a gentle setting for slowly developing flirtation.

Sometimes a simple “Is the water temperature OK?” can become the warmest line of the night.

If you also happen to be planning a trip to Bangkok, consider spending an evening at Kaikan Onsen. It doesn’t have to be for socializing — it can be a quiet reset for body and mind. Share this with friends who might be interested, and feel free to leave your experience in the comments below; I’d like to know if the vibe is the same every time (haha).
